4 Steps for When You Are Missing an Ingredient

When you are looking at a recipe and you realize that you are missing an ingredient there are a few things you can do before going out to buy the exact thing you need.

For example, you have 'almost' all the ingredients to make hamburgers, but you're missing the buns.

  1. The first thing you should do is look in the fridge for something similar! In this example it could've been regular bread, baguette, pita, naan, tortillas.

  1. If you don't find something to replace it with, remember that Google is your best friend, so look up alternatives for your specific ingredient. In this case, a paleo alternative like using a leafy green like lettuce or cabbage would be a great healthy alternative!

  1. Lastly, dare to try something different! Take anything you already have and try to make it work with your principal ingredient. For example, you could have had a frozen piece of dough and could have made a little bun with it. You could also wrap the patty in a rice sheet like a spring roll if you have that in your pantry. You can even make your own buns if you have a lot of free time. Personally, I always have some leftover pastry dough that I didn't completely use, so I could have made some crispy buns with it! Remember that you don't always have to follow the recipe. Sometimes your own version can be just as good or even better, you never know! So go crazy and try something ;)
